Frequently Ordered Tests for Patients with Kidney Related Issues:

Blood and Urine tests can tell us how well your kidneys are working. Your doctor may decide to do blood and urine tests if you are at risk for kidney disease or kidney failure.

There are two types of urine tests. One type requires a small amount of urine. It tells the doctor if the urine contains blood, infection or cells. The other requires collecting all the urine produced for a certain period of time.

CREATININE CLEARANCE- Normal range (90-120ml/minute)
A 24hour urine collection along with a blood test. This will tell the doctor approximately at what percent your kidneys are functioning. We now often get an estimate of percent function based on a blood test and a formula.

CREATININE- Normal range (0.5-1.4mg/dl)
One of the waste products of normal metabolism found in your blood. It is not influenced by diet. This is a test to determine how your kidneys are functioning. As the level goes up, kidney function goes down.

BUN- (blood urea nitrogen)- Normal range (5-25mg/100ml)
A blood test which determines the amount of waste built up in your blood. It is influenced by the amount of protein in your diet, but primarily on your kidney function.

POTASSIUM- Normal range (3.3-4.9mEq/L)
Essential mineral in your blood which your body needs to function properly. A high level can cause abnormalities of the heart rhythm.

CALCIUM- Normal range (8.5-10.5mg/100ml)
Essential in your blood.

PHOSPHORUS- Normal range (2.5-5.0mg/100ml)
Essential mineral in your blood that helps your body make fat, bone, carbohydrate and energy. It works with calcium in the body. It is eliminated by the kidneys and so the level goes up in chronic kidney disease.

HEMOGLOBIN- Normal range (12-16)
A blood test that indicates the level of red blood cells which are carrying oxygen in your body. Patients with chronic kidney disease become anemic and hemoglobin goes down.

HEMATOCRIT- Normal range (37-47)
A blood test which tells the percentage of red blood cells to the total volume of blood. The value follows the same direction as the hemoglobin.

GFR- (Normal is greater than 100)
Percent kidney function (as the value falls so does the kidney function.) It is calculated from your creatinine, age, sex and race.

Placement of dialysis access should be considered when function is less then 20%.
These are very rough guidelines and may vary widely in individual patients.

NOTE: Normal ranges may vary slightly, depending on the laboratory testing facility.
